Newborn Chimp Debuts at Adventure Africa Exhibit

Chimpanzee Elaine and Father Alf presented the Rio Grande Zoo in Albuquerque, NM with a beautiful baby girl on February 5, 2007.
This addition brings the total chimp number at the Adventure Africa Exhibit to 11. This is the first chimp newborn since the exhibit opened in 2004. The mother is 30 years old, and Dad Alf is 19. Albuquerque will look forward to meeting this healthy zoo baby this spring. Add to your knowledge of this wonderful creature.
- C aptive chimpanzees have a life expectancy of 60 years. Those living in the wild
- Have a 40 year life span.
- Instances of older chimps? Cheetah of Tarzan fame will be 75 this year.
- Males are 3-4 feet tall and weigh up to 155 pounds.
- Pygmy chimps are smaller, but similar in appearance.
- Adult females are 2 to 3.5 feet tall and weigh up to 110 pounds.
- Newborns weigh around 4 pounds.
- Zoo specimens, like their African counterparts,
- Eat an omnivorous diet,
- Enjoy the ability to laugh, use tools, and have learned a
- Sign language in scientific experiments.
